4-year-old takes a 2-ton SUV on a solo run to the sweet shop

The mile-and-a-half drive ended safely, with 4-year-old Sebastian Swenson being met by police at a petrol station.

It started at about 8:30 am, when Sebastian’s mother Jenna realised that he was missing. The boy had used his great grandpa Roy Becker’s Zimmer frame to push the car keys off a hook and hopped into the Hyundai Santa Fe while no-one was looking.

“He watches everything people do and he’ll repeat it,” said great grandpa Roy.

Even though Sebastian could barely see over the dashboard he managed to start the car and pilot it down some narrow suburban streets before tuning onto Blaine, Minnesota’s busy, four-lane University Avenue and continuing at speeds between 10 and 15mph.

“It could’ve been very serious,” added great grandpa Roy. “He could’ve hit a car. He wasn’t wearing a seatbelt. We could be talking about a funeral.”

Blaine Police Department’s Capt. Mark Boerboom commented: “I’ve never seen a driver this young before operating a vehicle.”
