Will Young ‘doesn’t buy’ Taylor Swift releasing LBGT-friendly video during Pride

Will Young admits he is ‘questioning the motives’ of Taylor Swift’s support of the LGBTQ community during Gay Pride, stating he ‘doesn’t buy it’.

Taylor, 29, surprised fans with the music video for her latest single, You Need To Calm Down, which features a gay wedding, rainbow flags and appearances from several Queer Eye stars as well as a host of her a-list celebrity friends.

While some fans applauded Taylor for standing with the LGBTQ community, others criticised the Grammy-winning popstar for choosing to release the video in the middle of Pride Month when she remained silent on gay issues during Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential election.

Reacting to Taylor’s sudden support, Will – who is openly gay – told Metro.co.uk: ‘I just don’t know if I buy it to be honest, it’s not a personal thing. She’s a brilliant songwriter but I just don’t buy it.

‘All her famous friends in her video before – it’s just not my kind of taste and as a gay man, I questioned the motives behind it.

‘It ties in neatly to Gay Pride – why not do it when it’s not Gay Pride?’

Will thinks Taylor, who has won 10 Grammys, is a ‘great songwriter’ but ‘likes to be popular’.

But Will’s issue doesn’t just lie with Taylor as he explains: ‘There’s a lot of people in Pride Month that do a broad brushing [like] a bank will throw up a rainbow flag for a month and everyone wants to jump on the bandwagon and I don’t like it.

‘It doesn’t feel authentic. I don’t like the flavour of it.’

The 40-year-old singer, who is on course to land this week’s number one album with Lexicon, feels people jump on the bandwagon because there’s a lot of ‘attention’ on Gay Pride.

‘There’s a lot of rubber stamping going on,’ he said.

‘I think Pride is wonderful, I just think it’s always important to mention why people are doing things.’

The Evergreen singer revealed that he’s working on a mystery project with a company whom he feels takes their support of the LGBTQ community seriously with thorough research, and hopes to see more from others in the future.

Drawing on his own experience as a young gay man, Will continued: ‘For me, the Pride March is very powerful and I remember seeing that when I was 18 and I hadn’t come out yet and it was the first time I’d seen people who were gay.

‘It is brilliant but I think we should concentrate on young people and almost broaden out Pride to embrace all different and making it more of a universal thing.’

But he wondered: ‘I wish we had a much bigger party in London so we can have popstars performing. They are in Manchester but they’re not coming to London.’

Will has returned to pop after a four year break with his new album Lexicon, which is on course to land this week’s number one on the UK chart, making it the popstar’s fifth chart-topping album.

Will Young’s new album Lexicon is out now.
