Why Sam Smith Had Liposuction at 12 Years Old

Being comfortable in your body is not something that comes easily for most people. No matter how talented or beautiful a person is, chances are there is something that they are insecure about.

We know Sam Smith as the confident singer with the voice of an angel, but he has had a long battle with learning to love his body.

He struggled with his body image so severly that by the time he was 12, he opted to get liposuction. The procedure helped his confidence at first, but it was like putting a bandaid on a gaping wound.

“I had liposuction, I was 12 years old,” Smith recently told Jameela Jamil on the I Weigh Interviews Instagram series. “At the time I think I was very happy about it. It didn’t really change anything. I think I put the weight back on in two weeks because I hadn’t figured out my relationship with food, so it didn’t really change anything. But being 12 years old and having liposuction on your chest is quite a big deal.”

The decision to get the surgery came after Smith had been constantly bullied for having breasts. Though the singer has now lost a significant amount of weight and is looking trim today, he still says that his issues with his body are “the basis of all [his] sadness.

And what’s worse is that he always felt like he couldn’t talk about his insecurities openly because no other males were talking about theirs.

“Especially no well-known men,” he continued. “Even doing this chat feels kind of weird, because guys don’t speak about this that much on a big scale.”

For Smith, feeling like he needed to keep quiet was an everyday struggle.

“It’s the toxic masculinity conversation isn’t that, that’s weighing over all the guys all the time,” he told Jamil. “It weighs over me. It doesn’t feel manly to talk about how I feel in my body every day but that’s what I’m trying to fight against.”

But the singer is obviously not staying silent anymore. On Friday, he posted the interview to his Instagram and said that the experience changed him forever.

“A few months ago, I sat down with @jameelajamilofficial and spoke with her for her incredible @i_weigh movement,” he wrote.” I know this sounds dramatic but this interview completely changed my life. Being able to talk so openly about my body issues and feeling so safe whilst doing it was truly liberating.”

Overall, he hoped that the interview could free someone else up from feeling like they can’t talk about their insecurities.

“It took a lot for me to do this and I was so nervous, so please be kind haha,” he continued. “I really hope this can make someone else who feels like me, a little less lonely and a little less alien.”

Smith’s weight loss journey

In 2015, Smith started getting serious about changing his relationship with food. In his past, he had been a very emotional eater.

“From a young age, food has controlled me, basically,” he once told 60 Minutes Australia. “When I was at school and wasn’t having a great time or when music wasn’t going very well, I would eat. When I felt lonely, I would eat.”

Ultimately, it wasn’t a fad diet or exercise regimen that changed his life. No, it was actually a therapist named Amelia Freer.

“Amelia Freer has helped me lose over a stone in two weeks and has completely transformed my relationship with food,” he wrote in an Instagram caption that has now been deleted. “Everyone go check out her incredible book, and start to live healthy. It’s not even about weight loss it’s about feeling happy in yourself.”
