Early Friday morning, Ariana Grande dropped a surprise remix of her new single “7 Rings,” featuring rapper 2 Chainz, who delivers a new verse.
The re-upped version of the track arrived just weeks after Grande, 25, faced criticism for the song. Hip-hop artists Soulja Boy and Princess Nokia took to social media to compare their own songs (“Pretty Boy Swag” and “Mine,” respectively) to “7 Rings.”
Fans online also commented on “7 Rings” sounding similar to 2 Chainz’s own “Spend It” and juxtaposed the pink house in Grande’s music video to 2 Chainz’s pink “trap house” in Atlanta, where the rapper has offered free HIV testing.
If the pop star and 2 Chainz ever had any beef, it’s clearly quashed now.
Upon the release of the “7 Rings” remix, Grande tweeted the song’s new art, proclaiming she “made a new friend” in the Atlanta-based rapper, who retweeted the sentiment.
“7 Rings” — which made its debut on the Billboard Hot 100 its first week of release — is the third release from Grande’s upcoming fifth studio album, thank u, next (due Feb. 8) and comes on the heels of the previously released title track and “imagine.”
Grande first opened up about the inspiration behind “7 Rings” in her Billboard “Woman of the Year” cover story in December.
“It was a… challenging fall day in New York,” Grande told the music magazine of writing the track, likely alluding to her the aftermath of her breakup with Davidson.
“Me and my friends went to Tiffany’s together, just because we needed some retail therapy,” Grande said in the interview, revealing she gave diamond rings to her pals.
“You know how when you’re waiting at Tiffany’s they give you lots of champagne? They got us very tipsy, so we bought seven engagement rings, and when I got back to the studio I gave everybody a friendship ring,” she explained. “That’s why we have these, and that’s where the song idea came from.”
Grande dropped “thank u, next” in November. The upbeat break-up anthem, which she referred to as an “acceptance” song after having experienced love, patience, and pain from her past relationships, became Grande’s first track to top the Hot 100 chart, where it remained No. 1 for seven weeks.
