Steel Magnolias actress Olympia Dukakis dies ‘after months of failing health’

Steel Magnolias and Moonstruck actress Olympia Dukakis has passed away at the age of 89.

Her brother Apollo Dukakis took to Facebook to confirm the heartbreaking news on Saturday.

He announced that his sister sadly died "after months of failing heath"

In his social media statement, Apollo penned: "“My beloved sister, Olympia Dukakis, passed away this morning in New York City. After many months of failing health she is finally at peace and with her Louis."

He attached a photograph of Olympia smiling alongside his social media post.

Fans of the American star have since paid tribute to the actress, who acted in over 130 stage productions, over 60 films, and in 50 television series.

One fan penned: "Oh no!! I am so sorry to hear this. My deepest sympathies to your family. What a powerhouse and a pride of our community. Legend."

Another added: "Our deepest condolences to you and your family. We are so fortunate to have been witness to her brilliant work. The talent and devotion that your family represents is an inspiration to all."

"I am so tremendously sad to hear of her passing. She was amazing and unforgettable. Wishing you peace in your time of loss.," A third person posted.

While. fourth wrote: "I’m sorry for your loss Apollo Dukakis and a great loss to the international theatre and film world. RIP"

"Rest in Peace, Olympia Dukakis. She was amazing in so many things, but for me, she was the essence of “Tales of the City,” as Mrs. Madrigal. She will be missed," a fifth fan said.

Dukakis shot to fame thanks to her Oscar-winning turn in Moonstruck, in which she played the mother of Cher’s character. back in 1987.

She was also nominated for a Golden Globe Award for her role in Sinatra and Emmy Award nominations for Lucky Day, Joan of Arc and More Tales of the City.

As well a starring in Look Who's Talking, Dukakis is known for playing Clairee Belcher in 1989 move Steel Magnolias alongside Dolly Parton.

The television star more recently Dukakis master classes in acting throughout the U.S. and elsewhere.

Dukakis was the first cousin to former Democratic candidate for president Michael Dukakis.

The actress is predeceased by her husband, actor Louis Zorich, who died in 2018.

She is survived by daughter Christina Zorich, an actress; sons Peter and Stefan Zorich; and at least four grandchildren.
