See Taylor Swift Talk ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ New Song ‘ME!’ on ‘Ellen’

Taylor Swift, in a new interview with Ellen DeGeneres, recalled how she accidentally ruined a wild fan theory by not appearing in the superhero blockbuster Avengers: Endgame. “There were some fans that thought I had something to do with [the film],” she said on Wednesday’s Ellen. “I would have loved to have been asked, but I wasn’t asked to be in it at all. Because we had the single coming out the same day, and I have a song called ‘Endgame,’ so they were like, ‘Oh, my god, she’s gonna defeat Thanos.’ I let everyone down again.”

The singer — who recently appeared on the cover of Entertainment Weekly wearing a jean jacket adorned with symbolic pins — noted that her fans are “excellent” at deciphering such Easter eggs.

“I like to plant Easter eggs in a video that will be a lyric from unreleased music or a little hint or a wink to what’s coming in the future,” she said. “That was kind of the theme of what we did the Entertainment Weekly thing on. It’s just been really fun to expand the musical experience past just listening to a song. I also want people to be watching the video and [saying], ‘What’s that thing in the background? What’s that song playing underneath there? Is there a reason she said that in French?’”

Elsewhere in the interview, the pop star talked about her video for “ME!” with Panic! at the Disco’s Brendon Urie — including how she adopted a “cat actor” she met on the set and why she speaks French at the beginning of the clip. Asked if the language choice has a deeper meaning, she replied, “Yeah, definitely.”

Staying on the feline theme, Swift teased her upcoming role in Cats, an all-star film adaptation of the popular stage musical. “We all went to cat school,” she said of the cast, which also features Jennifer Hudson and James Corden. “You have no idea — all my dreams came true on the set of this film. They’re like, ‘You can come to set as much as you want,’ and I ended up being there every day for four months.’”

The songwriter also confirmed that — at least for now — she’s finished recording what will be her seventh LP. “Unless I write something else,” she said, “and then I’ll just probably put it on the album.”
