Queen: WATCH Adam Lambert’s American Idol audition – Simon Cowell had a problem with THIS

Looking back it seems inevitable. The choice of song alone was an incredible portent of what was to come and these days Lambert tours the world with Queen. But when 26-year-old unknown Adam Lambert walked into his first American Idol audition in 2009 and unleashed an incredible acapella rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody, not all the judges were blown away. Watch the incredible moment and Simon Cowell’s initial concerns about putting the singer through to the next round.

Judge Kara DioGuardi immediately began to rave about what they had all just seen and then fought for Lambert when Simon Cowell was not convinced.

Cowell said: “I’m going to give you my opinion for what it’s worth. I think you are…theatrical.” When Kara asked if Lambert was a good singer, Simon added: “Yeah, but…”

It’s incredible to think that Lambert’s entire pop career could have stopped right there. Scroll down to watch what happened.

Randy Jackson jumped in with: “I think it’s time, currently, for someone like you. Yes, I like this guy.”

Paula Abdul told Lambert: “I think you’re brilliant” and when Kara asked Simon what his vote was, the British judge simply said, “Yes.”

With Kara muttering that it was like “pulling teeth”, Lambert left the room with four yeses.

Abdul told the room: “He’s awesome. I liked him. He’s awesome. He’s the best we’ve seen in every city,” – but there was still one more shock to come.

Lambert soon began to shine on the series and progressed to the live shows. His rendition of Tears For Fears’ Mad World even brought Simon Cowell to his feet.

Yet, he was controversially pipped to the title by the all-American Kris Allen. After winning, his eponymous debut album hit No9 on the US charts and he has enjoyed moderate success since then.

Lambert’s debut album, For Your Entertainment, hit No3, followed by the chart-topping Trespassing in 2012.

Ten years later, he is a global star, about to embark on a new stadium tour with Queen.
