Piers Morgan leads tributes to Deborah James as he hails her ‘inspiring’

Piers Morganhas led tributes to Dame Deborah James, who has sadly passed away at the age of 40.

The journalist and cancer campaigner died on Tuesday (June 28) following a long battle with bowel cancer.

The mother-of-two was first diagnosed with the disease in 2016 and continued to raise awareness for the condition.

Sharing his condolences on Twitter, Piers wrote: "RIP Dame Deborah James, aka Bowel Babe. A truly remarkable and inspiring woman. Such sad news."

Piers' followers also shared their tributes dedicated to Deborah, with one writing: "So sad, such an inspirational lady….. R.I.P Deborah I’m so sorry you will not be here to see how much you are going to change the country (hopefully) world is going to change thanks to your story and campaigning."

A second commented: "Such a truly lovely, selfless and inspiring lady. RIP Dame Deborah. Thoughts are with your devoted family at this saddest time. Your legacy lives on."

Following her diagnosis, Deborah had been receiving end-of-life care for bowel cancer at home and had raised millions to help others affected by the disease.

During her fundraising, the You, Me and the Big C podcast host was given a damehood in May in recognition of her efforts.

Deborah's family announced her death in an Instagram post which was shared with Deborah's permission.

The caption read: "We are deeply saddened to announce the death of Dame Deborah James; the most amazing wife, daughter, sister, mummy. Deborah passed away peacefully today, surrounded by her family.

"Deborah, who many of you will know as Bowelbabe, was an inspiration and we are incredibly proud of her and her work and commitment to charitable campaigning, fundraising and her endless efforts to raise awareness of cancer that touched so many lives."

The family continued: "Deborah shared her experience with the world to raise awareness, break down barriers, challenge taboos and change the conversation around cancer. Even in her most challenging moments, her determination to raise money and awareness was inspiring.

"We thank you for giving us time in private as a family, and we look forward to continuing Deborah’s legacy long into the future through the @bowelbabefund.

"Thank you for playing your part in her journey, you are all incredible.

"And a few final things from Deborah…'find a life worth enjoying; take risks; love deeply; have no regrets; and always, always have rebellious hope. And finally, check your poo – it could just save your life.' x"
