Sir Paul McCartney made sure his historic headlining gig at Glastonbury was memorable by bringing out Dave Grohl and Bruce Springsteen as surprise guests.

The 80-year-old became the oldest solo headliner at the Somerset festival just a day after Billie Eilish became the youngest ever at 20.

Paul's setlist kicked off with a rendition of The Beatles’ hit Can’t Buy Me Love and went on to contain the likes of Love Me Do, Ob-La-Di, Can’t Buy Me Love and My Valentine.

He began the surprises by introducing Grohl, who was marking his first live appearance since the tragic passing of Foo Fighters' drummer Taylor Hawkins in March.

Paul said: "I’ve got a little surprise for you. My friend from the west coast of America, Dave Grohl."

It had not been a smooth journey to get to the Pyramid Stage revealed Grohl. He said: "Well I started on Wednesday, then the flight got cancelled, back to the airport Thursday and then the flight got cancelled, but I swear I would never miss being on stage with you right now."

The two played a medley with the highlight being a rendition of the Wings' Band On The Run, before Paul added: "Love you Dave thank you man we all love ya. Ladies and gentlemen one more time – Dave Grohl."

The shocks didn't stop there, though, with Paul continuing: "We have another surprise for you from the east coast of America, it’s Mr Bruce Springsteen."

Springsteen reunited with Paul on stage to perform Glory Days much to the delight of the Glastonbury crowd.

Earlier, Paul received a hero's welcome to the Pyramid Stage, before saying: "Oh man, it’s so good to be here. We were supposed to be doing this three years ago. I've got a feeling we're going to have a great time tonight."
