Paris Jackson Wasn't 'Forced' to Seek Treatment, Says Source: 'This Was Her Decision'

Paris Jackson is starting off the new year by focusing on her physical and emotional health.

“She had a long year traveling around the world for work and charity projects and was feeling really run down,” a source close to the musician and model, 20, tells PEOPLE. “She needs this time to get back into a healthy routine.”

Jackson — who has been open about her struggles with depression, anxiety and substance abuse in the past — is “completely focusing on herself for a bit” to get back in as “positive” a space as possible, says the source.

“There wasn’t some big event that led to her seeking treatment,” adds the source. “This was 100 percent her own decision. No one forced her to get help.”

On Tuesday, a source close to the star confirmed Jackson recently checked into a treatment facility.

“yes i’ve taken a break from work and social media and my phone because it can be too much sometimes, and everyone deserves a break, but i am happy and healthy and feeling better than ever!,” Jackson — who is dating her Soundflowers bandmate Gabriel Glenn — wrote on her Instagram Wednesday morning.

“gabriel and i have some new music we’re stoked to share with y’all! hope you guys’ new year started out with lots of love and light and all the things. i’ll be back soon!! xxox,” she concluded her first post on social media since Dec. 12.

Jackson was hospitalized in 2013 after attempting suicide and opened up about her mental health during an interview with Rolling Stone in 2017.

“I was crazy. I was actually crazy. I was going through a lot of, like teen angst. And I was also dealing with my depression and my anxiety without any help,” Jackson — who ended up seeking treatment at a residential therapy program — told the outlet.

Last April, she hit back at reports claiming she was out of control. “So apparently people think I’m about to die,” she said, referencing a Page Six report claiming she was headed for a “serious meltdown.”

“My therapist texted me about it laughing though, so that’s good. So I guess to the family members that are talking to all of these news outlets saying they’re worried for me: When is the last time you called me?”
