We’re only five short months away from one of the biggest televised musical events of the year: the Super Bowl Halftime Show—AKA the best part of the Super Bowl Sunday, even if you like sports! And for 2019, Billboard reports that Maroon 5 is headlining the show, with Cardi B and Travis Scott on the short list for special guests.
A band rep declined to comment when Billboard asked about the news, and the National Football League is also keeping this year’s star performer under wraps for now. “It’s a Super Bowl tradition to speculate about the performers for the Pepsi Halftime Show,” the NFL said in a statement. “We are continuing to work with Pepsi on our plans but do not have any announcements to make.”
Back in 2015, Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine told Howard Stern in an interview on his SiriusXM radio show that the band “very actively wants to play the Super Bowl.”
Last year, Justin Timberlake performed at the 52nd Super Bowl halftime show, to mostly less-than-positive reviews. Before JT, there was Lady Gaga’s stage-diving (as in, diving onto the stage from the top of the stadium) 2017 performance, Coldplay in 2016, and Katy Perry’s left shark spectacular in 2015.
Currently, Maroon 5’s song “Girls Like You” is number two on Billboard’s Hot 100; over the years the band has had bops like “Sugar,” “Misery,” and “Moves Like Jagger.” But already the news is already receiving criticism, and people are saying it’s a poor choice in particular considering the Super Bowl is being held in Atlanta. (Also I mean, let’s be real, nothing’s ever going to top Beyoncé’s 2013 Super Bowl extravaganza.)
Of course, none of this matters if you’re boycotting the NFL. But for those who do plan on watching, Super Bowl LIII game will take place on Feb. 3, 2019, airing on CBS.
