Madame X – identified by her signature eye patch – is the queen of pop’s mysterious new alter-ego.
She describes Madame X as a ‘secret agent travelling around the world, changing identity, fighting for freedom’.
And we now know that the character has taken the form of ‘a dancer, a professor, a head of state, a housekeeper, an equestrian, a prisoner, a student, a mother a child, a teacher, a nun, a sinner, a saint, a whore and a spy.’
Bringing these characters to life, Madonna used state-of-the-art technology which has previously been used to bring deceased pop stars back to the stage, like Tupac at Coachella in 2012 and Michael Jackson at the 2014 Billboard Music Awards.
But Madonna’s performance, complete with CGI green screen, is believed to have cost $5 million dollars of her own money, with Billboard contributing nothing to the staging, reports suggest.
Signalling her return to the pop scene, Madonna has been practising the performance at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas for the last week to make sure that timing and positioning with the Madame Xs was laser-sharp.
Early reports suggested that it was ‘one of the most ambitious performances ever attempted on live TV’.
And Madonna did not disappoint on the night. Fans watching at home hailed it a triumph, calling the stage show ‘fire’ and ‘legendary’.
Suffice to say, the Queen of Pop is officially back!
