Despite his EGOT status, John Legend wants to assure his fellow Voice coaches that they have nothing to be afraid of.
The Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony-winning singer is replacing coach Jennifer Hudson and joining Kelly Clarkson and veteran coaches Adam Levine and Blake Shelton for season 16 of NBC’s hit reality singing competition series — and while he’s in it to win it, he says he’s just a “nice, sweet boy from Ohio.”
In a promo for the show shared exclusively with PEOPLE, the returning coaches paint a very different picture of Legend, 40, as they voice their concerns about having him as a competitor.
“I’ve never been more terrified to be on this show with a coach than John Legend,” Clarkson, 36, says, before later adding, “He’s everyone’s threat, they don’t know it yet. He’s the threat.”
Levine, 39, agrees, “John is a threat. I mean, John has like 4,000 awards and he’s incredibly talented and very charming.”
As Shelton, 42, puts it, though, “John has got a target on his back.”
“But you know what he doesn’t have?” Shelton continues. “Six Voice trophies.”

Despite Shelton’s confidence, Levine makes it clear: “We’re scared, John. That’s it. I’m scared, alright?”
In the end, Legend isn’t fazed.
“I’m just an ordinary person, as they say,” he quips, which is a play on his 2004 hit “Ordinary People.”
The Voice returns for season 16 on Feb. 25 at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.
