J. Cole is embarrassed by the 'platinum with no features' joke

In case you haven’t heard, J. Cole went platinum with no features. And the rapper has definitely heard it — too many times in fact.

Talking to GQ for the magazine’s latest cover story, J. Cole addressed the internet’s favorite argument for why he’s one of music’s best artists. “I was loving it,” he says of the popular meme. “I was like, ‘Word up—this is funny as hell.’ But the second or third time, I was like, ‘All right, it’s almost embarrassing now.’ Like, ‘All right, man, y’all gonna make me put a feature on the album just so this shit can stop.’”

J. Cole’s last three albums — 2014 Forest Hills Drive, 4 Your Eyez Only, and KOD — have all featured zero guest appearances and have all indeed gone platinum. But now, the 34-year-old rapper does sound like a man ready to let the joke die considering he’s trying to open himself up, which might lead him to doing the unfathomable: having features on his next album.

“Well, I don’t have any right now that I really want to boast about,” he told GQ. “Not saying it’s impossible. It’s just about getting out of my comfort zone.”
