Hear Amber Mark’s Cardi B-Inspired Funk Song ‘Put You On’

Amber Mark released “a subtle New York anthem” titled “Put You On” on Friday. The track features a guest verse from the rapper DRAM.

“Put You On” drips with references to R&B and hip-hop from the first half of the Nineties — the fat synthesizers and big bassline point to tracks like Jade’s “Don’t Walk Away” and Brownstone’s “If You Love Me.” Mark narrates a New York City-based love story and offers an invitation of sorts: “Let me put you on, I want something more/ Maybe this time, you’re what I’m looking for.” DRAM shows up to shout-out New York neighborhoods.

In a statement, Mark explained, “the idea of the song came from wanting to talk about a woman who made it out of the hood in New York and into the top of success.” “Cardi B was really blowing up at the time,” the singer continued, “and I thought a similar story to hers would be such a vibe for the production. The beat sounded so much like summer in New York and I figured it would be dope to make a subtle New York anthem.”

Mark’s Conexão EP came out in May. She also appeared this year on songs by Chromeo, the Dirty Projectors and DJDS.
