Ed Sheeran's 'Shape of You' Earns the Artist His Second RIAA Diamond Certification

Ed Sheeran has made music history once again.

On Thursday, the Grammy-winning singer’s hit song “"Shape Of You"” earned a RIAA Diamond certification after the song reached sales and streams greater than 10 million.

Sheeran shared the happy news on social media. “My song Shape Of You is now diamond in the US!” he captioned a video on Instagram. “Thanks to everyone who’s downloaded or streamed it.”

Sheeran’s latest feat scored him a spot in history as the fourth artist to receive multiple Diamond certified songs since the status was first implemented 20 years ago. His song “Thinking Out Loud” a single off of his 2014 album x, previously went Diamond in 2017.

“Shape Of You,” the lead single off of the singer’s 4x-Platinum certified third studio album ÷, debuted at Number One on Billboard‘s Hot 100 and held the spot for 12 weeks before remaining in the Top 10 for 33 consecutive weeks thereafter — the most in the chart’s 60 year history. The song also made Sheeran the first artist ever to have two singles debut in the Top 10 at the same time when “Shape of You” was released in tandem with the 3x-Platinum certified single “Castle On The Hill.”

Sheeran recently launched his very own collection of guitars, Sheeran by Lowden, with premier luthier Lowden, based in Northern Ireland.

Next month, Sheeran will resume his worldwide stadium tour in São Paulo, Brazil in support of ÷, which set the world record in 2018 for highest grossing tour ever in a calendar year with $432 million in ticket sales, according the Pollstar.

Sheeran’s ÷ album marked his musical comeback following a brief hiatus after wrapping up his x Tour in December 2015. A full year later, the “Perfect” singer returned to Instagram with a cryptically simple post to kick off promotion of his latest album.

“I ended the tour and I [realized] I hadn’t ever really lived a life,” Sheeran — who gave fans a peek into his time off in Apple Music’s documentary Songwriter — told PEOPLE exclusively last September about his decision to take a break. “It’s quite weird being a touring ‘celebrity.’ People assume you’re living the best f—ing life in the world, but you don’t really get to live any life because you work the whole time.”

“I was like ‘F–, I’m 25, I left school early and went straight into touring,’” he adds. “I haven’t properly formed relationships with people so I needed to have a year off and spend it with friends and family and [now-fiancée] Cherry [Seaborn] and actually become a human being.”

Though the star had some reservations about including his future wife in Songwriter, Sheeran ultimately decided to give fans a glimpse into his relationship.

“She’s awesome, but I was against having her in the documentary just because I like to keep my personal life private,” he says. “But I think it’s such a split second of it and it does just capture what she’s like. It’s nice for people to see a little bit of that!”
