Dolly Parton family: How is Dolly Parton related to Miley Cyrus?

Dolly Parton and her husband Carl Dean did not have any children of their own. Despite this, the country singer has family all around her, including family not linked by blood. The Cyrus family is part of this extension, as well as her extended family of adoring fans.

How is Dolly Parton related to Miley Cyrus?

As mentioned, Dolly Parton is not related to the Cyrus family by blood, but by a close familial bond.

In fact, Dolly is Miley Cyrus’ godmother, though she prefers the term “fairy godmother” as it is less “official”.

This came about actually because of Dolly’s link with Miley’s father, country singer Billy Ray Cyrus, whom she met in the 1990s.

Dolly and Billy Ray originally met when they toured together soon after the release of his most famous single Achey Breaky Heart.

Rather than sparking rumours of being related, however, it instead sparked romance rumours, as Billy Ray revealed in an interview with Closer.

He said: “When I was on her tour, there was a headline that she and I were romantically involved.

“Dolly looked me straight in the eyes and said, ‘Honey, that s*** sells records!’”

The pair even went on to release a single together, Romeo, which became a chart hit in the USA.

Their friendship was clearly very deep, so much so it has trickled down to Billy Ray’s daughter Miley.

Miley was born the year Achey Breaky Heart came out, and Billy Ray asked Dolly to be Miley’s godmother, which she accepted, though on the condition she could be more like a “fairy godmother” instead.

Miley’s breakout role was in the Disney series Hannah Montana, in which the Working 9 to 5 singer played her Aunt Dolly, appearing in several episodes as a guest star who to dispense sage advice with her young “niece.”

Also, the pair have performed together a number of times, first at an Independence Day concert of Dolly’s.

In 2016 the country singer joined her goddaughter on the stage of The Voice alongside a capella singers Pentatonix, where they performed a new rendition of Jolene, a rendition which was repeated when Dolly sang with various performers at the Grammys in 2019.

The pair are evidently incredibly close, with Dolly telling Anderson Cooper: “I don’t get to see her as often as I’d like but she’s a special gal and I hope she does great in this world.”

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight about Dolly, Miley said: “She teaches people not to judge a book by its cover, or its huge boobs or its big hair.”

Clearly the families are very close, despite not being blood-related.

However, with Dolly having not had children of her own, she clearlt sees Miley as one of her own.
