A stagehand for the Coachella Music and Arts Festival died Saturday morning at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, PEOPLE confirms.
Indio police spokesman Ben Guitron confirmed that authorities received a call about an accident at the concert grounds. The worker died at the scene.
“Upon arrival, they discovered a worker at the concert staging area who had had a fall and had passed away. We responded to assist. It was an industrial accident,” Guitron said in a statement.
“It happened while the worker was working on the staging area. The coroner will release the name [of victim]. OSHA is reviewing the incident now. We send our condolences to family and friends,” Guitron said.
The worker’s identity has yet to be disclosed to the public.
Cal Fire tweeted about a “traumatic injury” and said a person “fell from a roof and perished at the scene” near Avenue 50 and Monroe Street.
Goldenvoice, which puts on the Coachella Festival each year, tells PEOPLE in a statement: “Today, Goldenvoice lost a colleague, a friend, a family member. Our friend fell while working on a festival stage. It is with heavy hearts and tremendous difficulty that we confirm his passing. He has been with our team for twenty years in the desert and was doing what he loved. He was a hard-working and loving person that cared deeply about his team. As our lead rigger, he was responsible for the countless incredible shows that have been put on at the festival. We will miss him dearly.”
The man was “climbing the stage scaffolding to do some rigging” and he “fell about 60 feet to the ground,” TMZ reported, adding that he was not clipped in and had no safety harness attached to a cable to prevent him from plummeting.
Weekend one of Coachella is scheduled to begin on April 12 with weekend two kicking off on April 19.
Ariana Grande, Childish Gambino and Tame Impala are set to headline the main stages with Zedd, Bad Bunny, Khalid, Solange, Kid Cudi and Pusha T are slated. YG was also announced as a performer, as well as Tale of Us, Playboi Carti, Razorbumps, Sabrina Claudio, Ella Mai, J Balvin and Jaden Smith.
