Australia's greatest showman Hugh Jackman has won over British viewers with his singing and dancing chops, after a crowd-pleasing performance at Thursday's Brit Awards.

Host Jack Whitehall slyly introduced the all-rounder as "Australia's answer to Bradley Walsh", which might mean something to viewers of UK quiz show The Chase.

Jackman is set to launch an arena tour across Europe and the US from May, with Australian dates expected to be announced in the coming week.

The big winners on the night were rock band The 1975, who took out British Group and British Album of the Year, for their critically-acclaimed A Brief Inquiry into Online Relationships.

In the evening's most politically-charged speech, frontman Matt Healy quoted a recent article from The Guardian's Laura Snapes, which railed against misogyny in the music industry in the wake of harassment allegations against indie darling Ryan Adams last week.

"She said that in music male misogynist acts are examined for nuance and defended as traits of 'difficult' artists, while women and those who call them out are treated as hysterics who don't understand art," Healy said.

The band will be touring Australia in September.

Calvin Harris also claimed two awards, for British Producer of the Year and British Single of the Year for One Kiss, his duet with Dua Lipa.

George Ezra earned the British Male Solo Artist prize, while Jorja Smith – frontrunner for performance of the night with a star-making rendition of her emotional Don't Watch Me Cry – won the British Female Solo Artist award over the likes of Florence Welch, Lily Allen and Jess Glynne.

Glynne provided the night's other viral moment, gradually removing her makeup onstage as she sang her self-empowerment anthem Thursday.

Drake, Ariana Grande and The Carters – that is, Beyoncé and Jay-Z – took out the international awards, with the latter accepting their prize in a video from their home, positioned in front of a framed portrait of Meghan Markle (a not-so-subtle jab at the UK media's prolonged harassment of the country's first black royal).
