Leading women in roots, folk, country and soul music dominate the 2019 Americana Music Honors and Awards nominations.
Acclaimed songwriter Lori McKenna tops the nomination list, earning three nods: One in Album of the Year and two in Song of the Year.
English soul-roots performer Yola earned nominations for Emerging Act of the Year and Album of the Year for 2019’s “Walk Through Fire.” Americana breakout The War and Treaty joins Yola with two nominations, for Duo/Group of the Year and Emerging Act of the Year.
Songwriting great John Prine also landed a pair of nominations — Album of the Year and Song of the Year — for work on his highly regarded 2018 release “The Tree of Forgiveness.”
Unlike the CMA or ACM awards, which received backlash for failing to nominate a female act in either show’s marquee Entertainer of the Year category, the Americana Music Honors and Awards selected a clean sweep of women for Artist of the Year: 2019 Grammy Award winners Brandi Carlile and Kacey Musgraves, celebrated folk songwriter Rhiannon Giddens and soul legend Mavis Staples.
Eligible music was released between April 1, 2018, and March 31, 2019, per the Americana Music Association website. Association members submit nomination considerations each spring.
In its 18th year, Americana Music Honors and Awards take place Sept. 11 at the Ryman Auditorium — an anchor event for the 2019 Americanafest, which runs Sept. 10-15 in Nashville.
Brandi Carlile has enjoyed the whirlwind of events in the past year, including a new daughter and a new band, Highwomen.
