Why it's time to slip into: The easy-breezy dress

No big sleeves. No fancy collars. And absolutely no frills. Why it’s time to slip into: The easy-breezy dress

The temperature is climbing, and I feel a summer dress coming on. A full-length maxi is out (particularly when you’re short like me), as high heels are often needed to keep it off the floor.

And a mini might frighten the bin men, even from a socially acceptable distance. So a midi it is. Over the years, the style has been prettified — last summer it was hard to move (sometimes quite literally) for frills, ruffles and prairie-style tiers.

But now it’s time to take it back to basics. Strip out that ruffled neckline, ignore the asymmetric hem, and say no to off-the-shoulder dresses, which require precision positioning, not to say corsetry.

Interestingly, the High Street has turned its back on the catwalk dress trends (dreamt up long before anyone had heard of PPE).

So, while Christopher Kane showed models in tiered ruffles, and Gucci favoured cutaway designs, it seems we can now forget all that hoopla.

Of course, while opting for comfort, it’s worth remembering this dress will have to work in company one day, so pick something you’d choose in the ‘normal world’ — just without fussy add-ons. For obvious reasons, do check it is machine washable, like those pictured here.

Boden’s green jersey style will suit pear-shaped silhouettes, as the stripe is vertical at the hip and horizontal across the chest.

If you have a heavier bust, look for a shirt style, such as the Ditsy print from Jigsaw or French Connection’s leaf print.

The easiest midi shape, in terms of comfort and fit, is a loose-tiered style, such as this blue leaf-print number from M&S.

Do, however, avoid the temptation to go for a bigger size than you would usually wear. There is a fine — but stylistically crucial — line between a look that says ‘comfort’ and one that says ‘curtains’.
