Why Did Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams Break Up?

Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams seemed like a match made in heaven. They’re both talented, gorgeous, and excellent at playing romantic leads a-la The Notebook. So what ultimately caused the lovebirds to split?

And despite the breakup, are they still friends?

Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams met while auditioning for ‘The Notebook’

According to Gosling, The Notebook wasn’t going to get made unless they could find a perfect woman to play the part of Allie. The producer, Mark Johnson, ended up auditioning ten A-list celebrities, from Britney Spears to Jessica Simpson. Although they were outstanding in their auditions, they didn’t have the proper chemistry with Gosling that McAdams had.

“We tested ten actresses with Ryan,” said Johnson in a behind the scenes video. “Nine of them were very well known. We went around with a video camera and looked for people that were working and interrupted them from their movies, and some of them were really, really, really great. But when Ms. McAdams came in and read, it was apparent that she was the one.”

And according to Gosling, he immediately knew that he wanted to work with McAdams during the audition.

“She came in, and she just took the role,” said the Crazy Stupid Love star. “And it was clear to me, anyway, that this was an actress that I wanted to work with.”

Mutually, McAdams said that her audition for the romance film was the most thrilling experience of her life.

Why did Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams break up?

Gosling and McAdams were a lot like their characters from The Notebook. Just like Allie and Noah, they bickered all the time. But in the end, of course, they fell madly in love.

After making the movie, Gosling and McAdams entered a serious relationship that lasted for two years. But why did they decide to end things?

According to Gosling, their mutual stardom became too much for the relationship to handle. Because they were both so famous at the time, they both seemed to neglect their relationship in favor of their acting careers.

He told GQ magazine, “When both people are in show business, it’s too much show business. It takes all of the light, so nothing else can grow.”

Still, despite their split, they remained supportive of each other after their break up, and managed to maintain a solid friendship.

‘The Notebook’ fans were furious with the actor for his breakup with Rachel McAdams

According to Gosling, die-hard fans of The Notebook were furious with him after his split with the Mean Girls star.

He told GQ, “A girl came up to me on the street, and she almost smacked me. Like, ‘How could you? How could you let a girl like that go?’ I feel like I want to give people hugs. They seem so sad. Rachel and I should be the ones getting hugs! Instead, we’re consoling everybody else.”
