Warning as soaring temperatures plus pollen ‘explosion’ sparks hell for millions | The Sun

BRITS are set to bake this week as temperatures soar – but it also means misery for millions of hay fever sufferers.

It could get as steamy as 32C in some places this week as hot air blows in from Iberia and France.

Whilst many people will be keeping cool in paddling pools and with ice lollies galore – many allergy sufferers might opt to stay indoors.

The pollen count is already very high in four areas today, with London and the South East, the South West, the East of England and the West Midlands all being struck by a pollen explosion.

Tomorrow, these high levels will spread across the country – with the majority of the country experiencing very high rates.

People in the North East will come away slightly unscathed and will suffer high levels, with those in Scotland having a low pollen count.

These levels are expected to last for the rest of the week, with allergy sufferers being sure to stock up fail-safe remedies such as nasal sprays and antihistamines.

Hay fever is worse between late March and September – especially when it's warm.

Summer sun is proven to circulate pollen and mould spores – leaving you red eyed and full of sneezes.

Most people tend to have their windows open during hot weather, making it easier for the pollen to float through your house.

Studies show that some are now less immune than usual to pollen, after spending months indoors due to Covid lockdowns.

Independent pharmacist, Rita Ghelani said there are some things you can do to manage your allergies over the next few days.

Her first tip, she said, is to be aware of the pollen count and try and prepare for when levels are higher.

She added that you should also close the windows: "Even though it is warm and nice outside, make sure to keep your house as allergen-free as possible so you have a place to escape when needed.

"You could also invest in a household air purifier."

Frequently showering to get allergens off your body will also help as well as changing your linen and bedding.

Rita added that you should also avoid using a car's air con system, unless it's filtered first.

"Many car heating and air conditioning units suck in air from the outside so it is good to find out if your car’s system filters the air or you are at risk of sucking in and circulating pollen and allergens," she said.

You could also try and dab Vaseline or nasal balm around the nostrils to stop pollen entering the nasal passage.

She added that if you're opting for a nasal spray, then you should go for one without xylometazoline, (or oxymetazoline) which works by causing the blood vessels in the lining of the nose and sinuses to contract and narrow.

"Initially, the ingredient appears to help reduce swelling, it reduces the production of mucus and the general feeling of congestion.

However, products containing this ingredient should not be used continuously for more than seven days as they can cause rebound congestion.
