Valentine’s Day set to be hottest day of year before icy snap brings snow

Britain is set to heat up this week – with temperatures aptly predicted to peak on one of the most romantic days of the year.

According to forecasters, Valentine’s Day could see temperatures climb to the high teens – before warnings of another icy blast and possible snow storms sweeping across the UK towards the end of the month and into March.

The so-called heatwave, given the time of year, is thanks to a blast of warm air and high pressure moving in from the Azores in Portugal, where temperatures are currently 17C.

This means Britain could be welcoming average temperatures of 16C this February 14 – which would make it the warmest day of the year so far.

Director and forecaster for the Weather Outlook Brian Gaze said: "The weather during the coming days will be very mild for mid February. Temperatures could reach 16C (61F) later this week in the southern half of the UK.", reports the Sun .

He added: "Mid February – Valentine’s Day – often brings some of the coldest weather of the UK winter but this year it looks like many of us can expect an early taste of spring.

"The mild conditions are the result of the UK being sandwiched between high pressure over the near continent and areas of low pressure in the Atlantic."

However, throughout most of February, forecasters have also warned of a possible second Beast from the East, a snap of winter weather which brought Britain to a standstill last year.

John Hammond from Weathertrending said: "Southern and eastern areas are most prone to a continental chill from February 18, with an ongoing chance easterly winds will bring much colder air towards us."

Met Office forecaster Simon Partridge told the Daily Star: “We’ve certainly not had the last cold spell of winter.

“There are cold spells likely in the period from February 22 until March 10.

“We may see snow to low levels with nights below zero, although it’s too early to say how low temperatures will go.

“Spring might officially start on March 1 but there’s still potential cold ahead even in March.”
