University Challenge viewers mock student’s VERY animated reaction

‘He hasn’t mastered the nod and sip of water’: University Challenge viewers mock Cambridge student’s VERY animated reaction after answering question to take his team to victory

  • Elijah Granet, from San Diego, California, celebrated win with double fist pump
  • After taking Clare College through to the next round, he put arms out wide
  • Viewers said he lacked decorum of typical University Challenge contestant

Viewers mocked a Cambridge student’s very animated reaction after answering a question correctly to take his team to victory on University Challenge last night.

Elijah Granet, from San Diego, California, celebrated his win with a double fist pump, before putting his arms out wide.

He correctly answered ‘Robinson’ to the question ‘What common surname link a paramour of the future King George IV nicknamed Perdita, the US author of Housekeeping Gillead and the Irish president?’

Granet, who is studying a master’s in politics, put Clare College in the lead by 10 points just moments before the show ended – securing his team’s place inthe next round of the competition.

After realising that his answer had taken his team through to the next round, Granet (far right) put his arms out wide in celebration on Monday night’s University Challenge

Viewers quickly took to Twitter to comment on Granet’s exuberant reaction, with many suggesting he lacked the usual decorum of a typical University Challenge Contestant.

One wrote: ‘Granet, we don’t behave like that on #UniversityChallenge. Please don’t do that again.’

Another added: ‘Can you get “sent off” on #UniversityChallenge – there may be case for it’.

Meanwhile, one Twitter user commented: ‘Granet is so clearly American – he hasn’t mastered the embarrassed nod & sip of water that’s standard practice after any contestant gets a right answer’.

Viewers were quick to mock Granet’s reaction, with many suggestion he lacked the usual decorum of a University Challenge contestant (above)

However, others defended Granet’s reaction, which saw Clare take victory over Hertford College, Oxford, by 160 points to 150.

One viewer commented: ‘The set is a hugely tense environment: wouldn’t you want to automatically air punch if you got the match breaker to win the thing?’

Another simply posted: ‘Screw the haters. Granet is an absolute baller.’

The debate over Granet’s celebration comes after viewers went wild for Darwin College’s captain Jason Golfinos last week, after buzzing a record 13 starter questions.

Golfinos’ performance prompted comparisons to University Challenge legend Eric Monkman, who enjoyed a flood of media opportunities following his appearance in 2017 and even landed his own show for BBC Radio 4.

University Challenge continues on BBC Two next Monday at 9pm.
