Each year, The Grocer tracks the prices of everyday goods in supermarkets to find out where shoppers can get the most for their money. One supermarket has held the top spot since 2014 and it has won yet again this year.

The cheapest supermarket for a basket of 33 essential items for the past year was Aldi, the latest price comparison from The Grocer shows.

The discount retailer has maintained an unbeaten record since it was first analysed alongside Britain’s other major supermarkets by the Grocer in 2014.

Its independent price comparison survey demonstrates that Aldi is the UK’s lowest-priced supermarket.

A basket of 33 products is £10.15 cheaper – or 23 percent cheaper – in Aldi than in the Big Four supermarkets.

The UK’s Big Four supermarkets are Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s, and Morrisons.

Aldi is also cheaper than its closest rival, Lidl.

Thirty-three essential items from Tesco cost £10.23 more expensive than from Aldi, according to The Grocer.

Meanwhile, Waitrose is the most expensive UK supermarket.

A basket of 33 items bought in Waitrose is £25.06 pricier – or 56 percent – than a shopping bag of the same number of items from Aldi.

Last week, The Grocer also announced the winner of its ‘Store of the Week’ survey.

To compile the ranking, one store from each UK supermarket is subject to a mystery shop.

The Aldi store in Shiremoor, outside Newcastle, picked up the title after the mystery shopper was impressed by its fully stocked shelves and excellent customer service.

Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi, commented on Aldi’s win. She said: “The nation knows that Aldi won’t be beaten on price.

“That is our promise to customers and one we will always keep.

“We understand that it’s been another challenging year for many people, and as we move towards the festive season we want to help families and friends get together.

“We’re committing to helping our customers do just that by offering the award-winning quality and unbeatable prices they can only find at Aldi.”

Although Aldi is the UK’s cheapest supermarket for 33 essential items throughout the past year, according to The Grocer, other similar price comparison surveys show different results.

Earlier this month, consumer group Which? found that the lowest-priced supermarket for a basket of 23 essential items throughout the month of August was Lidl.

Shoppers would have paid, on average, £24.11 for a basket of everyday items at Lidl.

This was just 43p less than Aldi but a huge £9 cheaper than upmarket Waitrose.

The comparison included food items such as apples and eggs, as well as branded goods like Hovis wholemeal bread.

Ele Clark, Which? retail expert, said: “The weekly food shop can have a big impact on consumers’ pockets, which is why we check hundreds of grocery prices everyday.

“Our latest analysis shows shoppers don’t have to pay over the odds for a trolley of popular groceries if they go to Lidl, which was the cheapest supermarket in August.”
