This Reader-Fave Coat Is 40 Percent Off and Selling Out Fast

Now that we’re firmly in “cold enough to wear as many layers as possible” weather, we’ve been on the hunt for a great coat. In our opinion, not enough attention is paid to jackets and coats — they’re sometimes seen as an afterthought, or as a necessary but unfortunate part of living in a cold climate. If you ask Us, however, we’d argue that a great coat isn’t just a way to keep the wind out or from freezing. It’s a way to add even more dimension and texture to an already great outfit. And hey, even if the look we have underneath is less of a “look” and more of a hodgepodge of items thrown together to walk the dog or make a coffee run, well, a coat can cover up any style sins, too.

One of the best outerwear investments you can make is in a timeless longline jacket. It’s less fussy than a peacoat and the clean lines and minimal detailing ensures that it’ll pair well with everything, even your fanciest dresses for parties or the sweats you practically live in. One of our favorite styles, the Topshop Lily Knit Back Midicoat, encapsulates that effortlessly chic look we love. If it looks a little familiar, you’re right — we raved about it at the start of fall. We’re not the only ones who loved it, either: Readers (like you!) couldn’t get enough of the topper, so once we saw it seriously marked down at Nordstrom, we knew it would be a crime to not share.

We might be a little biased, but it really is just such a stunning coat. It has single-button closure, so if you’re wearing it on a really cold day, we recommend pairing it with a cashmere scarf and layering up with a chunky knit underneath. There’s a notched lapel that’s giving us menswear vibes, plus two roomy front flap pockets. It’s made largely of acrylic and polyester, with just a hint of wool for added warmth. The shoulders are also meant to drop a touch lower than your natural shoulders, giving off the aura that you just borrowed a (very well-dressed) guy’s coat.

The best bit, however, has to be the array of colors it comes in. There’s the classic black, of course, and a stunning marled gray that seems very Parisian-chic to Us. For fans of color, there are two different shades of green — one Forest shade that makes us think of the tops of pine trees, and a playful bright green that will definitely enchant the eye of a street style photographer (or someone scrolling on Instagram).

Our absolute favorite of the bunch has to be the dreamy camel shade. It’s a whimsical café au lait hue that’s perfect for wearing with both brights and neutrals. To add even more “cool factor” to the topper, the coat even has contrast bright poppy red trim around the back and the lining of the pockets. It’s these kinds of thoughtful details that add a much more expensive vibe to the reasonably-priced style.

Reviewers dig the pretty coat as much as we do! Multiple shoppers called the coat “stunning” while others insisted that the Topshop design is the perfect coat to transition from fall into winter. Nearly everyone that reviewed Lily said they receive compliments every time they wear it.

The coat ranges from a US size two to size 12. However, the coat is intentionally oversized, so if you prefer a more streamlined look, size down. If we plan on wearing thick sweaters or prefer a roomier fit, we’d opt for our normal size.

While the coat can be made warmer if layered, it’s intended to be a light late fall or early winter option. It’s lightweight, so it won’t weigh us down even if we’re wearing it all day, but it’s still sturdy enough to withstand wind and a temperature drop. Keep in mind that it’s not lined, so we wouldn’t recommend wearing this on the coldest blustery days.

Not sure how to style Lily? We got you covered! For an everyday chic look, we plan on throwing in on over a roomy turtleneck and a pair of fleece-lined leggings for warmth. A pair of black or camel knee-high boots (we dig these by Sam Edelman) will complete the look. Be sure to chuck on a soft cashmere scarf and a hat for added warmth, if you need it. For a dressier look, we recommend teaming with a glittery semi-sheer long-sleeve top, tucked into a pair of wide-leg velvet pants and high-heels. Très chic!
