Many people might agree 2018 wasn’t always great. In fact, at times the year felt like a dumpster fire.
But not everything was bad. From some big royal moments that made our hearts melt and movies that rocked the box office to songs that got us moving, this year showed us there is still good in the world.
Black Panther’s box-office success
Wakanda forever! The Ryan Coogler-directed Marvel superhero movie was the first of its kind to feature a predominantly African-American cast, with Chadwick Boseman at the helm as King T’Challa, otherwise known as the “Black Panther.”
The film’s $202 million opening weekend was the fifth-highest of all time and best ever for a February release. The Marvel and Disney phenomenon crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide just weeks later.
The film also saw celebrities and community groups buying out theaters so people could watch the movie, and little kids had new characters to dress up as for Halloween this year. The movie also elevated and celebrated its black female characters while creating an entire world where black people thrived and provided much-needed representation.
