A Tesco shopper was left shocked after discovering the supermarket’s granola contains more sugar than its own brand chocolate.

Posting on Reddit, the customer explained they checked the label of Tesco’s Honey and Almond Toasted Granola and found it contains 22g of sugar per 100g.

In contrast a bar of the supermarket’s own brand 85 per cent cocoa plain chocolate contains 15g of sugar per 100g.

A comparison between the two labels reveals that while the granola has a higher sugar content, it contains less fat and saturates than the chocolate.

The granola also contains slightly fewer calories, 429kcal compared to 585kcal.

The post left other Reddit users shocked, with many saying they assumed the granola would be a healthier option.

Many Reddit users were shocked at the findings, saying they believed granola was healthier. Some, however, said that many breakfast foods are a lot more sugary than they first appear

One commented: ‘Sugary food masquerading as healthy food is one of my biggest pet peeves.’ ‘Breakfast should really be renamed morning dessert,’ another joked.

A third said: ‘I have literally just had this for breakfast’

However, others pointed out that breakfast foods marketed as being healthy can actually be the opposite.

One said: ‘Always makes me laugh that people think that breakfast processed foods are healthy because they put a picture of a field on the front of the packet.’

Another wrote: ‘The whole thing about breakfast being the most important meal of the day is just marketing bs.’

A third agreed: ‘I realised that cereals all totally suck for sugar content, so I gave up and only eat Weetabix Minis with the chocolate chips. If I’m gonna eat a bowl of sugar, I don’t want it to pretend to be fruit.’

MailOnline has contacted Tesco and is awaiting comment.

Many shopper don’t know that most granola is deceptively unhealthy.

Anna Raymond, dietitian and spokesperson for the British Dietetic Association, previously told the Mail on Sunday: ‘Most granolas are classified as high sugar, with more than 12.5g of sugar per 100g, much of which has been deliberately added to make it taste more palatable than the granola once found in health food shops

‘Health guidelines recommend consuming no more than 90g of sugar in a day. Don’t be fooled by the addition of honey – it’s still a sugar, and no more healthy.’
