Billed as one of the list desirable racing 911s ever, Porsche produced only 55 versions of this car. With such a limited number, it fetched nearly $1 million at a Gooding & Company auction in 2015.
13. 1974 911 Carrera RS 3.0 (TIE)

Car economics are the same as regular economics. High demand coupled with a limited supply drives up prices. Just like the car that started our list, Porsche produced only 55 of these Carreras in 1974, which is why it fetched $1.37 million at a Sotheby’s auction.

Since Porsche made just 10 versions of this car, it was likely to be one of the most expensive Porsches ever auctioned no matter what. When you consider it was No. 1 in its class at the 1979 Nurburgring 1,000 km race, it’s easy to see why it surged past $1 million in a Gooding & Company auction.

Porsche as a company dates to 1931 when it officially opened its first office. But it took more than 60 years for it to make a lightweight, turbo-charged production car. The 1993 964 is that car, and it went for more than $1.5 million at a 2017 auction, making it one of the most expensive Porsches ever sold.

Noted Porsche enthusiast Jerry Seinfeld put this car on the auction block in 2016, and it nearly doubled the estimated selling price. That’s what happens when the owner is famous, the carmaker builds just 15, and the vehicle is well-maintained.

Jerry Seinfeld auctioned this car in 2016, just like the previous car on our list. This one didn’t reach the estimated selling price, but someone paid $3 million for one of the five models Porsche manufactured.

This racing car is missing an important part — its roof — but it’s still a beautiful vehicle that meets two criteria. It’s one of the oldest cars on our list, and it’s one of the most expensive Porsches ever sold. This one went for $3.3 million at a 2014 Gooding & Company auction.

The 1970 917 isn’t Porsche’s ultimate driver’s car like a 959 is, but we can see why this one fetched nearly $4 million at a Bonhams auction. Even though it’s more than 45 years old, it still holds its own with modern supercars by going zero to 62 mph in just 2.3 seconds with a top speed of 240 mph.
7. 1979 Porsche 935

Price: $4.84 million
We know Paul Newman as one of the greatest American actors ever, but he was also an accomplished racecar driver, and this is one of the cars he piloted around the track. It’s one of the most expensive Porsches ever, and one of the most decorated. It won the Daytona 24 Hours and placed second at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1979.

Porsche made only four of the roofless racing RS60s in 1960, and the one that went to auction in 2015 is the last one left. So, it’s easy to see why it fetched $3.4 million to be one of the most expensive Porsches to hit the market.

Most places won’t let you take a racecar on the streets. It’s for your own safety and the safety of everyone around. So there’s no chance you’ll ever be able to park a Le Mans-winning 911 GT1 in your garage. But Porsche graced the world with 20 street versions of that car, and the one auctioned in 2017 is one of the most expensive Porsches we’ve ever seen.
4. 1972 L&M 917/10 Spyder

Price: $5.83 million
The 1972 L&M 917 was a beast on the racetrack, and it’s easy to see why. The 1,150 horsepower monster went zero to 100 mph in less than three seconds, and it won five of nine Can-Am races in ’72. Model No. 003 sold for a reported $5.83 million at a Mecum auction forty years later.
3. 1956 550 Spyder

The 1956 550 Spyder is the oldest car on this list and is firmly in the top five of the most expensive Porsches of all time. Everything on the car is original, and the model with chassis number 550-0090 went for $6 million at a 2016 Bonhams auction.
