  • If successful, she will become the world’s oldest commercial surrogate mother

Bump start: Her first surrogate baby at 27

Carole Horlock had said baby number 15 would be her last.

But at 52, Britain’s most prolific surrogate mother is hoping to have her 16th.

She is currently looking for couples or single mothers and aims to become pregnant early in the new year.

If successful, Miss Horlock will give birth just before her 53rd birthday – making her the world’s oldest commercial surrogate.

She said: ‘I’m determined to get pregnant one last time with a surrogate baby and I’m actively searching for a couple or single mother to help.

‘Yes, age is against me, but I’m still fertile and capable of carrying a baby as my body is still like clockwork.’

Miss Horlock, from Colchester, Essex, is marrying her partner of 21 years, Paul, next June and would like to give birth soon after.

She said: ‘At first Paul wasn’t at all thrilled at the idea of me carrying another baby, but he agreed after I told him it was something I really wanted to do.

‘It would be a bit awkward if I was nine months pregnant walking up the aisle. But we’ll work with it if that happens.’ Miss Horlock has two daughters of her own, Steffanie, 28, and Megan, 24, and has given birth to 13 other children as a surrogate on behalf of eight couples – including a set of twins and a set of triplets.

Family affair: Carole Horlock with daughters Megan, left, and Steffanie. Miss Horlock is looking for couples or single mothers and aims to become pregnant early in the new year

She had her first surrogate baby at 27 and last gave birth to a boy weighing 9lb 14oz in April 2013. Her most recent attempt was unsuccessful because the donor egg was a blighted ovum, which caused a natural miscarriage.

She insists trying again is the right thing to do – and hopes to find prospective parents within the next few weeks.

It comes after Sir James Munby, former head of the family court, defended the right of older women to have children because ‘today’s 60 is like yesterday’s 40’. He also argued that the ban on payments to surrogate mothers should be lifted. At present, women can only receive ‘reasonable expenses’, which can reach £15,000.

However, Miss Horlock’s plan was branded irresponsible by Barrie Drewitt-Barlow, of the British Surrogacy Centre, who said: ‘This woman has passed her sell-by date.’ And her own daughter Megan is said to be ‘furious’. Miss Horlock said: ‘She was worried about me putting my body through a pregnancy again … I’m hoping to bring her around.’

The oldest known surrogate mother is Anastassia Ontou, from Greece, who was 67 when she gave birth to her 43-year-old daughter Constantina’s baby girl in 2016.
