ASDA has been been joined by rivals Sainsbury's, Tesco and Morrisons by slashing petrol prices by up to 3p per litre, as the supermarkets gear up for a pump price war.
In a huge boost to the Sun’s ‘Keep It Down’ campaign, Asda announced the price cut this morning, as the Sun exclusively revealed, taking unleaded nationwide to 110.7p per litre and diesel to 112.7p.
The move comes just 48 hours after furious MPs and campaigners demanded petrol giants pass on a 4p saving at the pump.
Asda petrol chief Andy Peake said: “Asda is once again leading the way.
“This will be welcomed by the millions of drivers who have seen fuel prices rise since Brexit.”
Tesco has the biggest network of petrol stations with over 500 filling stations across the UK.
Peter Cattell, fuel director at Tesco, said: "With the busy festive season just around the corner, we know many of our customers will be starting to prepare for the big day.
"So to provide a little extra help we’re cutting the cost of petrol and diesel by up to 3p per litre at all of our 500 filling stations."
Roger Fogg, from Morrisons, said: “A fall in the price of fuel due to a stronger pound is allowing us to pass further savings on to our customers.
"We will continue to make sure we are as competitive as we can be on price in every one of our petrol stations.”
The Sun on Saturday revealed wholesale petrol prices have tumbled by more than 5 per cent in the past three weeks – but motorists were yet to see ANY cuts on the forecourt.
More than 50 Tory MPs demanded Chancellor Philip Hammond set up a new petrol price watchdog – and cut fuel duty in the Autumn Statement.
Three ways to cut down your fuel costs
Even though fuel prices are rising there are some ways to keep down costs.
1. Make your car more fuel-efficient. You can do this by keeping your tyres inflated, taking the roof rack off, emptying your car of clutter and turning off your air con when driving at lower speeds.
2. Drive more efficiently. Some ways to do this, include:
– Accelerate gradually without over-revving
– Always drive on the highest possible gear
– If you can, allow your car to slow down naturally as your brake is a money burner
– Re-starting your car is expensive, if you can keep moving
3. Find the cheapest fuel prices. Use PetrolPrices.com. All you need to do is enter in your postcode and tell it how far you want to travel (up to 20 miles).
Howard Cox, FairFuel UK co-founder told the Sun this morning: “Asda as usual is the first to cut pump prices significantly.
“This welcome kick-start to fairer pump prices must make other retailers follow, albeit it has been a long time coming with wholesalers deliberately not passing at least 4p to millions of hard-working drivers in October.”
RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams said: “While this level of cut is clearly good news it has come far too late as the wholesale price of fuel has been falling since the end of October when the oil price began to fall again.
"Retailers should have reduced their prices then rather than making one bigger headline-grabbing cut now. The RAC called for a cut last week so it’s a case of better late than never.
“The first two weeks of November unfortunately prove that the ‘rocket and feather’ does exist. This is a great shame as retailers previously had a good record of lowering their prices in response to wholesale cost savings.”
