Rihanna Turns Down Super Bowl to Support Colin Kaepernick

Talk about using your platform to make a statement! In the past, performing at the Super Bowl Halftime show has always been a huge deal. Beyoncé, Bruno Mars, Lady Gaga, Michael Jackson and pretty much all of the heavy hitters have performed there, so it’s always a hot topic to find out who will be chosen next.

Recently, it was rumored that Maroon 5 has been selected to perform at next year’s big game, which will take place in Atlanta, Georgia. Turns out, however, that the band responsible for hits like “Girls Like You” and “Sugar” were not the NFL’s first choice.

In actuality, Rihanna was originally asked to perform. Interestingly enough, the “Work” crooner declined because she is NOT here for how the NFL has treated Colin Kaepernick, who was the first player to kneel during the National Anthem as a symbol against racial injustice in the United States. Kaepernick hasn’t played in the league since 2017 and is currently in a legal battle against the NFL, who has blatantly blacklisted him ever since the kneeling protests began.

Naturally, fans were a little torn upon hearing that they almost got to see their fave perform at the Super Bowl, but for the most part they totally understand where RiRi is coming from. In fact, a number of fans came out to support Bad Gal’s decision to turn down the honor:

Clearly, Rihanna has tons of support, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some haters, too. For example, another Twitter user threw some shade by tweeting and then deleting, “@nfl @SuperBowl NEVER invite her again. Invite Kanye West.” If you’re scratching your head wondering what the punch line is supposed to be, they’re referring to the fact that Kanye West is a Trump supporter. Now that we think about it, though, it may not be a joke at all and the person who wrote that tweet might actually serious because, well, “This is America.”

Anyway, the Super Bowl is set for February 3 and some sources are reporting that Cardi B may be joining Maroon 5 for their performance. At this point in time it’s all here say, so we guess we’ll just have to wait to find out!
