Real Footy podcast: Why Essendon will struggle this season

The Bombers made some big changes through the off-season. They will have a new coaching structure and a new leadership group for 2020 as they bid to get back into finals and break a long drought of September wins.

But in the first episode of the Real Footy podcast for 2020, Michael Gleeson, Caroline Wilson, Jake Niall and special guest Emma Kearney discuss the issues that could hold Essendon back this year.

There are questions over their cultural set-up on and off the field, including their leadership group, in which some big names missed out and some elected not to join. Their fitness staff also comes under scrutiny, as does how John Worsfold and Ben Rutten will work as senior coach and coach-in-waiting this year.

Plus, how do other teams rate the Bombers? And is what they produce good enough to see them finally get a win in finals?

Peter Ryan also joins the podcast to talk coronavirus and the impact of the pandemic on AFL. How will it affect the season?

Our podcasters go through the biggest stories of the off-season, including Joe Daniher's contract and Alex Rance's shock retirement, and look ahead to what could be the biggest stories of this season, including Ken Hinkley's future as Port Adelaide's coach and whether the Demons can rebound from a disappointing 2019.

Kearney also gives insight into the AFLW, including her belief that the competition should be left alone for the next five years, and why the grounds women play on should be smaller.

All this and predictions for the upcoming season including flag favourites, who will be considered the best player in the competition at the end of the year, and Kearney's shout for AFLW best and fairest winner.
