People think I’m over the death of my wife but five years on I still miss her

She was my soulmate and was there by my side for all the best times of my life. She died from cancer, aged just 53.

I’m now 60 and trying my best to get on with my life but nothing is the same without my lovely wife beside me.

Trying to put on a brave face for everyone has left me worn out.

I still cry a lot when I am on my own. Now Christmas is coming and that is always very hard.

DEIDRE SAYS: Carry on taking each day at a time. It’s not wrong to cry but remember you don’t have to cope on your own.

Get in touch with Cruse Bereavement Care for support (cruse.org.uk, 0808 808 1677). Their More Than Words groups can help connect you with others in your situation and to get involved with local activities.

Christmas can be a little easier if you are in touch with others who really do know how you feel.
