New Omicron cluster emerges as Covid cases rise in 354 places – is yours on the list?

A NEW cluster of coronavirus cases have emerged in the UK and this interactive map reveals if your area is a hotspot.

Infections are still rising in 354 areas and rates have seen a dramatic rise in some parts of Northern Ireland.

Around six per cent of areas in the UK have seen a fall in infections in the last week and the map above shows current infection rates.

The Prime Minister has highlighted that no new restrictions are needed at present in order to combat Omicron.

Omicron is now responsible for the majority of cases in the UK and has taken over from the Delta variant.

Experts have however this week said that Omicron cases may have peaked, after three million Brits had Covid on New Year's Eve.

A string of hugely positive studies show Omicron IS milder than other strains, with the first official UK report revealing the risk of hospitalisation is 50 to 70 per cent lower than with Delta.

Covid booster jabs protect against Omicron and offer the best chance to get through the pandemic, health officials have repeatedly said.

There are five areas that have seen a rapid increase in cases in the last week, four of which are in Northern Ireland.

The only exception to this is Blaenau Gwent in Wales, which also has the highest rate in Wales, up from 932.6 cases per 100,000 to 3,077.7.

The other four areas are all in Northern Ireland.

Derry City & Strabane in Northern Ireland continues to have the highest rate in the UK, with 7,328 new cases in the seven days to January 2, the equivalent of 4,849.5 per 100,000 people.

It is also the area where infections have risen the fastest in the last week.

This is up from a rate of 1,756.3 for the seven days to December 26.

Fermanagh & Omagh in Northern Ireland has the second highest rate in the country, and is also the area that has seen the second-fastest increase in cases – up from 1,353.4 to 3,858.1, with 4,527 new cases.

Mid Ulster has jumped from 1,142.6 to 2,971.4 and Newry, Mourne & Down from 1,323.8 to 3124.9.

Health Minister Robin Swann this week said that Omicron infections had bought in an "unprecedented surge" of cases.

Mr Swan said the risk of catching Covid was "considerably" higher than before and urged people to continue to come forward for their booster vaccines.

Northern Ireland's chief scientific adviser, Prof Ian Young, said that it would not be surprising if cases climbed in younger age groups as school resumed.

Speaking to Stormont's health committee on Thursday he said: "Generally it will be a relatively mild illness with a small number of exceptions but the rate of household transmission is very high with Omicron and once a child becomes infected and is at home, there is a high risk of transmission to parents, grandparents or wider members of the family".

The most recent infection figures showed that the UK's daily Covid cases fell for the second day in a row as 179,756 new infections were logged yesterday.

Dr Claire Steves, a reader at King's College London working with the ZOE Covid Study App, said: "Omicron seems to be more successful at infecting those who have had previous vaccines but thankfully not necessarily leading to hospitalisation.

"So if you've only had two doses of vaccine so far and are eligible for a third dose, please do book it now."
