Motorway closed after pedestrian killed in early morning collision

Part of the M42 is closed after a pedestrian was hit and killed by a vehicle on the motorway north-east of Birmingham.

The fatal collision happened in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The northbound carriageway is closed between junctions 10 (A5, Tamworth) and 11 (A444, Appleby Magna), said Warwickshire Police.

One lane (lane two) is closed southbound after police set up privacy screens.

Rush hour commuters have been told to use an alternative route and expect delays of at least an hour, as the road is expected to remain closed until later this morning.

Superintendent Richard Long said: "We’re working with Highways England to keep disruption to motorists to a minimum however there will be delays this morning and we would urge motorists to find an alternative route if they can."

Warwickshire Police Operations and Communications Centre tweeted: "Please be advised that following an overnight serious RTC on the M42 northbound jct 10 (Tamworth) to jct 11 (Appleby Magna) the carriageway has been fully closed for a full police investigation.

"The M42 southbound has also been reduced to 1x operational lane past the incident (from jct 11 to 10) as we have installed incident screens in lane 2 to afford some visual protection for the dignity of those involved including police officers at scene."

Trapped traffic has been turned around, except for vehicles that are too large to safely turn, Highways England wrote in a tweet.

Highways England said: "The M42 in Warwickshire is closed northbound between J10 (A5, Tamworth) and J11 (A444, Appleby Magna) due to a serious collision.

"Warwickshire Police, West Midlands Ambulance Services and Highways England Traffic Officers are on scene.

"The road is likely to be closed for several hours and may impact on the morning peak travel period.

"In addition lane 2 is closed on the southbound carriageway to allow incident screens to be erected for police to carry out scene investigation work, this is causing long delays between J13 of the A42 and J10 of the M42."

Drivers were facing delays of at least an hour, Highways England said.

It has advised motorists to use the A38 at J28 of the M1 if heading south.

It added: "Traffic is being diverted and should follow the hollow triangle symbol.

"Exit at J10 and take A5 eastbound.

"At the junction with the A444 turn left and head north to M42 J11.

"Please allow additional travel time if heading towards the area this morning."
