Make your cash stretch the extra mile and save on your weekly shop with these top tips — plus win £15,000 in our raffle

That’s before you factor in cleaning products, toiletries and clothing. But there are ways to wring better value from your supermarket . . .

  • Look down. Most aisles are arranged with higher-priced items — the stuff supermarkets most want you to buy — at eye-level. Make sure to have a good luck up and down the shelves to see the choices there are. You could save a packet on own-brand or cheaper goods that are hidden away. For example, Dolmio bolognese sauce, £1 for 500g, is stored at eye-level, where you are most likely to spot it. Morrisons’ own-brand version sits on the bottom shelf and costs just 83p.

  • Be a cut above. You will pay a hefty premium for vegetables that are already peeled and sliced, so steer well clear. Tesco carrot batons cost £1.20 for 600g, but for 63p you can buy a 1kg bag of loose carrots. Buy regular fresh fruit and veg, like carrots, potatoes, leeks and peppers. It doesn’t take long to prep them at home.

SAVING: 57p

  • Get appy. Download the VA Commerce app so you can see deals at supermarkets in your area on your phone. We found Bold 2-in-1 washing gel on offer for £3.50 at Tesco, down from £5.78.

SAVING: £2.28

  • Read the small print. Supermarket labels show the price of products big and bold. Look closely at the smaller numbers underneath the main price. This shows the price per unit or per kilo or gram.
At Asda, Warburton’s toastie loaf is 13.3p per 100g. But Asda’s own-brand toastie loaf is just just 6.88p per 100g. Use this figure to work out the cheapest option and make the biggest saving.

SAVE: 50p

  • Go hunting. Look for items you need in different areas of the store and you can find some surprising savings.
Sainsbury’s own tinned chick peas are 55p but head over to the world-foods aisle and you can bag a tin for as little as 30p.
