Maddie HW dances onto the stage to Jennifer Lopez’s debut album hit Let’s Get Loud wearing a backless glitter leotard and tracksuit pants. She later explains the outfit was inspired by her admiration for pre-competition athletes.
“I like watching athletes before they go on the field,” she says. “It’s like, I’m really hot and really fit, but I’m not trying yet.”
Her show is relatable to any millennial who's lived in a cockroach-infested sharehouse, worked full-time at a call centre or been addicted to niche videos on YouTube. For Maddie, her crutch is videos of public marriage proposals. “Public proposal fails are also very funny if you need a pick-up one day," she says.
Her act briefly reaches a tender moment when she confesses her loud personality is at times a defense mechanism. But the jokes that follow teeter on absurdism as she combines art, song and dance to leave the audience in hysterics.
