Lorraine Kelly has been criticised by viewers for asking Claire Richards about her struggles with fertility – when she was meant to be speaking to her about her new music.

The TV host, 58, asked the mother-of-two about losing weight to boost her chances of conceiving, which seemed to throw the singer, 41, off the interview on ITV’s Lorraine.

When Lorraine asked if she’d ‘given up’ on trying for a third child Claire, who was told by doctors that she may have damaged her hormone levels as a result of her constant yo-yo dieting, seemed uncomfortable and told her ‘that ship has sailed’.

The interview was branded ‘intrusive’ by viewers, who took to social media to call it ‘uncomfortable to watch’.

Lorraine said: ‘You know what its like as a woman in the music business in particular if you dare to put on a little bit of weight everybody wags their finger and has somethhing to say about it.

‘Like me you’ve struggled, we’ve all struggled, haven’t we? You wanted to lose weight for a special reason because you wanted to have another baby.’

Claire looked a little bit thrown before giving her a short answer, saying: ‘Yeah we did at the time but it wasn’t to be so…’

However, Lorraine kept asking her about the sensitive subject, questioning if she would be trying again.

‘Have you given up with that?’ she said.

An uncomfortable looking Claire said she wouldn’t be trying again, as she is busy with her solo career.

She said: ‘I think so my youngest is eight now and Charlie’s just started secondary school so I feel like the ship has sailed.

‘It didn’t happen and there’s lots to do over the next few years and I think it wouldn’t be fair really. If it had happened at the time great but it didn’t.’

Lorraine’s questions were criticised by viewers, who called them ‘intrusive’.

One tweeted: ‘I can’t believe @Lorraine just asked Claire about trying for a baby! Why do people think questions like that are ok? Especially on TV!’

‘Felt very uncomfortable for Claire. I expected better than that from lorraine,’ another commented.

A third wrote: ‘It was so intrusive! I can’t think why she would bring that up, and Claire looked uncomfortable answering it. Deeply personal.’

Claire was told by doctors that she may have damaged her hormone levels as a result of her constant yo-yo dieting.

She has lost and gained between four and six stone an incredible six times.

She told the Mirror: ‘I guess maybe I feel I don’t deserve to be third time lucky. IVF just doesn’t feel like the right thing to do to my body.’

‘We are not going to stop hoping, but we are not trying as intensely as we were. I am a strong believer that if it’s meant to be, fate can always find a way.’
