It is not news that some people think President Joe Biden tends to be forgetful. But Donald Trump’s former press secretary Kayleigh McEnany just tweeted about a recent gaffe by the commander in chief, and while many folks would agree with the point she makes, others’ feathers are being ruffled by the ousted cabinet member’s words.
“This is why President Biden doesn’t hold press conferences. Wow!” McEnany commented in response to another tweet that called out Biden’s absentmindedness: “Whoops: Biden forgets the name of the Pentagon, as well as the name of his secretary of Defense, Lloyd Austin.”
A video clip shows the 78-year-old instead refer to Austin as “the guy who runs that outfit over there” (via New York Post). The unfortunate moment took place at a White House event at which Biden was announcing he is nominating two women generals.
Joe Biden's forgetfulness is a long-running joke but some don't find it funny
It is not a secret that Biden, who served as a senator and vice president for over 40 years, has long had a reputation for being forgetful (via History). The 46th president forgetting what year it was in 2017 is just one of many examples (via BBC). The joke about his memory failing at times has even taken root in popular culture, with a forgetful Joe coffee mug available on Amazon among many other similar products.
Meanwhile, reactions to McEnany’s tweet on the subject of Biden’s memory were mixed, with one person noting, “I don’t have dementia and half the time I can’t remember the name of my own kids. It doesn’t matter, he’s doing a fine job.” Meanwhile, another poster said, “It’s so sad to see this man in such poor health.” Another person tweeted, “We are just so happy to have a man of character and strength” while someone else asked, “How is this not elder abuse?!!!”
Clearly partisan politics play a role in how people see the issue of Biden’s forgetfulness, and we are about as likely to all agree on it as we were on who should win the election.
