Revealed: Kate celebrated her birthday with a family tea party with George, Charlotte and Louis (and William was home in time to join in)

The Duchess of Cambridge celebrated her 37th birthday with a family tea party at Kensington Palace, it has been reported. 

The royal is said to have wanted to keep the festivities low-key, opting for just a small gathering with her children, George, five, Charlotte, three, and eight-month-old Louis.  

While Prince William, 36, was busy with an engagement earlier in the day, he made it back home in time to join in the fun.

The mother-of-three is thought to have enjoyed a birthday cake and been given presents. 

Speaking ahead of the day, a source told Vanity Fair: ‘Kate’s not into big birthday celebrations, but [Prince] George and [Princess] Charlotte adore birthday cake, so there will be a special tea party at the Palace with candles and presents.’

The Duke of Cambridge spent part of the day at Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel, where he marked 30 years of the London Air Ambulance service.    

The prince left bystanders nervously laughing after he joked that he’d forgotten his wife’s birthday which coincided with his visit today.

He pretended to look surprised when two youngsters handed him a home-made card to celebrate the Duchess of Cambridge’s 37th birthday, telling the boy and girl: ‘Well done you for remembering!’ 

Before adding: ‘I did remember this morning, so I was okay.’

Kensington Palace marked the occasion by sharing a photo of Kate with the caption: ‘Thank you everyone for all your lovely messages on The Duchess of Cambridge’s birthday’, along with a balloon emoji.

Kensington Palace took to their Twitter account to share a tribute of the royal, tweeting: ‘Thank you everyone for all your lovely messages on The Duchess of Cambridge’s birthday’

Fans were quick to share in the excitement, with one commenting: ‘Happy belated birthday, my lovely duchess wishing you have lots of happiness and keep be my role model.’ 

Another added: ‘Happy Birthday Duchess! I hope you had a wonderful day!’ 

Over the coming year, the Cambridges’ middle child Charlotte is set to turn four in May and then start school in September, when she will most likely join George at private school Thomas’s Battersea.

George will be celebrating his sixth birthday in July, while baby Louis, turns one on April 23.
