A group of women have uncovered the surprisingly simple way you should be cleaning your indoor mats – and you don’t need any heavy-duty products to make it work.

‘Apparently this is common knowledge but I’ve never heard it,’ a Facebook post shared in Australian group began, followed by more than 23,000 comments.

‘Turn a rug upside-down and run a vacuum over it and all the dirt falls out of it. Did you know this?!? Look what was still coming out after the THIRD time of doing it. So nasty!’ The woman wrote, sharing a startling image.

‘This rug gets vacuumed a few times a week too.’

Instead of using the age-old method of taking the rug outside and ‘shaking’ the dirt out of it, you need only flip it over and vacuum as normal.

It’s a surprisingly simple alternative – and key for those who live in an apartment with no balcony.

Needless to say the vast majority of Facebook commenters loved the idea.
