In thrilling ‘Await Further Instructions’, the worst Christmas ever

This British sci-fi thriller is like the violent offspring of “Black Mirror.”

Madness begins on Christmas Day, when Nick (Sam Gittins) brings home his girlfriend Annji (Neerja Naik) for a family dinner. The most welcome guest at the table is David Bradley of “Game of Thrones,” who’s just as cranky here as he was during the Red Wedding. The chatter naturally turns political — and heated — because Annji is not white. And although the word Brexit is never directly said, it hovers.

The next day they wake up to find their doors and windows blocked by sheets of metal and the TV displaying an ominous message: “Await further instructions.” The on-screen directives change throughout the movie, becoming more and more extreme, as the trapped family argues over whether to slavishly follow them.

That’s when you figure the film must be a straightforward comment on the government — or perhaps TV news — and the masses’ tendency to do whatever they’re told. Well, keep watching, because “Await Further Instructions” is much more fun and shocking than that.
