Hundreds of pounds has been raised for a digger driver who wrecked the reception area of a Travelodge yesterday.
Footage of the incident shows the digger smash into the new hotel at the Liverpool Innovation Park shortly before 3pm.
But many have sympathised with the driver after posts online alleged the driver was missing £600 in wages for working on the site.
A GoFundMe page set up for the driver has raised nearly £1,000 – well over the goal of £600, reports the Liverpool Echo.
The page says: "This gofundme has been created to help fund the lost wages for the Travel Lodge – Edge Lane Digger Driver who is owed 600 in unpaid wages.
"600 is to be given directly to the driver with any extra used to pay any possible legal fees which may have arisen as a result of the demolition of the travel lodge.
"Many people in the building trade encounter such situations day in day out and this guy will have helped MANY tradesmen to get paid on time and to stand up for themselves when its really needed."
Many who donated also left messages of support on the page.
One man said: "Can’t feed kids with non payment of wages. This is a boss idea."
Collin Douglas also said: "I’m donating because both of my sons work in the construction/engineering business and both over the years have been ripped off by unscrupulous contractors, employing lads to do the work for them then before the end of the job going bust and not paying them."
Another man claiming to be a colleague of the digger driver contacted the Liverpool Echo to voice his support.
The man, who did not want to be named, said: "I stand by what my colleague did today.
"He is owed £600 in unpaid wages and it just isn’t fair.
"That’s a lot of money to all of us and he has tried in every way to get what he is owed. He felt this was his only choice."
A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "A report was received shortly before 3pm that the digger was being driven into the entrance of the Travelodge building in the Liverpool Innovation Park.
"The driver then left the vehicle and made off on foot in the direction of Edge Lane.
"Merseyside Fire and Rescue Services and contractors attended to ensure the site was safe."
