Celebrity chef Heston Blumenthal has gained a reputation for including only the most imaginative recipes on the menu’s of his globally renowned eateries. 

And now the British-born owner of Melbourne’s Dinner by Heston has offered a word of advice for those aiming for the perfect tasting wine without blowing their budget.

In a sit-down with the Sydney Morning Herald, Heston revealed how he recently learned a game-changing trick when it comes to drinking wine.

The ‘experiment’ as it’s lauded, involves the chef taking a sip of his drink while ‘picturing someone he loves dearly’.

Explaining the bizarre hack, Heston described how it’s an example of a person’s taste preference and their memory ‘playing in together’.

But the insider hack is far from the connoisseur’s only tip when it comes to creation, with his knowledge extending another part of the drinks cabinet. 

In 2017, the father-of-four revealed to FEMAIL the surprisingly straightforward way  to make the perfect gin and tonic.

Explaining his bizarre hack, Heston described how it’s an example of a person’s taste preference and their memory ‘playing in together’ 

His top tip? To add the fizzy soft drink last after the ice and the citrus of choice has been already poured in. 

Hester also stressed the importance of high quality ingredients when making a gin and tonic.

However this rule doesn’t extend to which gin, tonic or citrus are used, but rather should aim to experiment until you find a combination of all three that go perfectly together. 

A wide-rimmed glass is also crucial with many people going wrong by adding the tonic immediately after pouring the gin. 

His advice is to only add the tonic after garnishing with citrus and putting plenty of ice in the glass, as it apparently allows the flavours to mix without the need to stir the cocktail too much.

Everyone has their own preferences when it comes to the perfect gin and tonic. The gin is obviously the most important part, but the right tonic is crucial too.

It’s important people experiment to find their own ideal blend – but in my opinion, a good quality gin, a tonic that isn’t too sweet, lots of ice and citrus are the only things you need.

The type of citrus you use depends on the type of gin and its particular botanicals. It’s worth experimenting with different gins, tonics and pieces of citrus fruit to see which go best together.

The glass you choose to drink from makes a difference too – and the right one depends on the gin, the tonic and the garnishes. If the gin is particularly aromatic, you need a wide rimmed glass to ensure the aromas come through as you’re drinking the cocktail.

Put the gin into the glass first and then add your citrus of choice, then plenty of ice and finally the tonic, to taste. This order of assembly will allow the effervescence of the tonic to mix all of the flavours together without much stirring.

We tested a lot of different flavours for our new Citrus Sherbert Lazy Gin and found the best tonic is the Fever-tree Mediterranean Tonic. I would recommend drinking this with just ice, no slice, in a bowl glass, to release those amazing citrus aromas.
