‘Haunted Mansion’ to Release on Disney+ in October

“Haunted Mansion” is ready to spook Disney+ customers in October.

Disney’s kid-friendly horror comedy, which is inspired by the classic Disneyland theme park attraction, will hit the streamer on Oct. 4. Directed by Justin Simien (“Dear White People,” “Bad Hair”), “Haunted Mansion” follows single mother Gabbie (Rosario Dawson) and her 9-year-old son (Chase Dillon), who enlist the help of so-called spiritual experts to exterminate their home of various ghosts, ghouls and ghastly creatures.

Coming 20 years after Eddie Murphy’s “The Haunted Mansion,” the new film stars LaKeith Stanfield, Tiffany Haddish, Dawson, Jamie Lee Curtis, Owen Wilson, Danny DeVito, Jared Leto and more. Katie Dippold wrote the screenplay.

“Truth be told, the PG-13-rated feature — which marks the studio’s second big-screen adaptation of its spooky theme park attraction — isn’t really that scary,” Variety film critic Peter Debruge wrote in his review. “Director Justin Simien (‘Dear White People’) leans more on comedy than horror, bringing together a handful of funny stars to deal with Gracey Manor’s ghost problem. The result is certainly a lot less frightening than the prospect of having to revisit the 2003 Eddie Murphy version, which paled in comparison with that year’s ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl’ on all fronts (but didn’t seem half as desperate as 2002’s ‘Country Bears’).”

Disney+ on Wednesday launched a limited-time promotion offering the ad-supported version of the streaming service for just $2 per month for three months in the U.S.
