Hair expert shares ‘super flattering’ hairstyle for ‘older women’

Express.co.uk spoke exclusively to Gary Douglas co-founder of Hail Your Hair, about how a woman’s hair changes as she gets older, what hairstyles are the most flattering and the brand’s new hairdryer he has helped design.

There are several hair styling tools that claim to protect the hair, but how should hair need to be taken care of? Express.co.uk spoke exclusively to an expert in the hair industry.

As a woman gets older, the texture of her hair changes, and how it’s looked after and styled needs to change too.

Gary said women will experience hair thinning, and explained: “As women begin menopause, they will likely experience a drop in oestrogen and progesterone levels. This can cause hair thinning and hair loss. =“

A loss of natural hair colour also occurs. He added: “ As women age, the amount of melanin present in their hair follicles reduces, leading to grey hair.

“Other factors can speed up your natural transition to grey hair, environmental factors (e.g. pollution and UV rays), stress levels, diet and lifestyle, and genetics.

“More and more women are choosing to embrace their natural greys and sport this change with confidence!”

Hair also gets frizzier and Gary said this is because “there is a natural reduction in the amount of oils your scalp produces as you age”.

“Natural oils can help to nourish the hair, increasing shine and moisture while forming a protective barrier for your hair. With fewer natural oils, your hair may become more frizzy and dry.”

When it comes to deciding what hairstyle is best for older hair, Gary spoke about bobs and layers.

“This classic haircut can look super flattering on older women when cut and styled correctly,” he said. “Styling a bob with layers, gentle waves and texture adds a touch of youthfulness while enhancing volume.

“Avoid bobs with longer pieces in the front as this draws more attention to the neck area – where you may first see signs of ageing.”

Layers

“As our hair tends to thin with age, older women may want to avoid very long hair without layers,” Gary explained.

“Introducing light and gradual layers with long hair will add freshness and movement, helping your hair look healthier and giving a more youthful appearance.

“That being said, every individual is different and we all have different styling preferences – it’s always best to seek the advice of your hairdresser if you’re considering a significant change!”

With a new hairstyle, it’s important to look after it, and the expert revealed what the biggest hair care mistakes are.

He said: “The biggest hair care mistake women can make is not taking the time to understand the unique needs of their own hair, which is the root cause of a lot of damage and frustration.

“Using too much heat and using water that is too hot, and overusing styling tools that are too hot can lead to breakage and hair loss.”

Another “common misconception” is that “air drying your hair is better than using a hair dryer”. Gary added: “When hair is wet, it swells in size and can absorb a huge amount of water in comparison with its weight. This causes hair strands to become weaker and more susceptible to damage and breakage.

“By air drying your hair, you increase the amount of time your hair is left wet and in this susceptible stage. To avoid this, you can dry your hair with a hair dryer while employing the best heat-protectant practices.”

As for how the Hail Your Hair hairdryer is different from others on the market, Gary said: “The Dryer uses a combination of wind speed and heat to dry your hair through an ergonomic airflow that not only protects the protein in your hair but also offers faster drying time.

“The hair dryer also has a negative ionic function. While blow drying your hair, the hair dryer emits negative ions that neutralise the atoms in your hair, resulting in less frizz and static.”

To add to this, compared with the most similar competitor products, the Hail Your Hair Dryer is 25-30 percent more affordable thanks to an online-only sales model. It’s also super lightweight – only 540g – and the “motor is an absolute powerhouse”.

The Hail Your Hair Dryer comes with a nozzle and diffuser attachment. The nozzle creates sleek styles whilst the diffuser gently disperses air, using a combination of heat and windspeed, so the curl pattern of your hair is protected and enhanced rather than disrupted.

The Hail Your Hair Revolutionary Hair Dryer is priced at £149.99 and available directly at hailyourhair.co.uk.
