Matty Edgell has been crowned the winner of this year's Great British Bake Off (GBBO).
On Tuesday’s episode of the Channel 4 programme, the PE and science teacher from Cambridgeshire was joined by fellow finalists Josh and Dan to make their final bakes.
The trio were tasked with a choux pastry signature, a sticky technical challenge and a celebration cake showstopper. Presenter Alison Hammond announced that Matty had won the show and upon hearing this, the 28-year-old, who has described himself as an “underdog”, expressed his surprise.
But what do we know about the star baker's life off screen?
After he was announced as the show's winner, Matty gave an insight into his life with his stunning fiancée Lara, as he said: “There have been so many ups, there have been so many downs, there have been so many times where I’ve had to be pulled through by the people closest around me, certainly Lara. I can’t image I’ve been too fun to live with for the past 10 weeks, I am happy for them as much as I am for me.”
Matty was also asked: “What do you think it was that got you here”, to which he sweetly replied: “Lara”, before bursting out into laughter.
The final episode of the 2023 series ended with a sweet montage of what the contestants had been getting up to since the show ended, including some particularly exciting news.
They showed a couple of sweet snaps of Matty and his fiance Lara from when they got engaged, along with the caption: “And after eight years together… Matty and Lara are getting married in June 2024."
The Bake Off winner is even expected to show off his baking skills on his wedding day as he is said to have received a special commission request from his fiancée to make their wedding cake.
A congratulatory post was also shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, by the official GBBO account.
"A huge congratulations from all of us at Bake Off to Matty and Lara on their engagement!" the post reads, alongside a picture of Matty and Lara.
In the sweet photo, which shows off Lara's engagement ring, Matty can be seen cuddling Lara as he kisses her on the cheek.
Teacher Matty marked his win with a post on Instagram, where he credited his family and Lara for their support during his time on the show.
In a lengthy Instagram caption, Matty said: "Thank you so much to all of my family for every bit of support and encouragement. Lara, I can’t imagine I was fun to live with at times and I am so grateful for the sacrifices you made for me throughout this! I don’t think I made dinner for 10 weeks. You had to live the Bake Off journey with me but never got to do the fun part.
"Through the highs and lows of my journey, you picked me up countless times, supported me and gave me the confidence I needed each week. Without you I wouldn’t have been able to do any of it (literally, Lara, I now thank you for applying for me).
"Finally, I’ve been so overwhelmed with the support and comments I’ve received throughout. From friends, colleagues, students and strangers, thank you all so much – you’ve made this the best experience! Thanks so much!"
