DOUBLE DENIM: A VERY FANCY DINNER PARTY ★★★★
Victoria Hotel, until April 21

If you’ve yet to take a ride on the Double Denim train, get yourself a ticket, because these girls are hilarious.

Winners of the directors' choice award at last year's festival, Michelle Brasier and Laura Frew are the kind of double act that have so much fun together on stage, it’s hard not to get carried away with them.

They bring a range of pitch-perfect characters with cleverly layered storylines, and use sketch, tight musical comedy (with great harmonies) and pure silliness to skewer reality TV, middle-class couples growing into their 30s, or British backpackers lost in St Kilda.

Brasier in particular brings a wonderful comedic sensibility to her wayward stage persona, with hilarious facial expressions and use of voice. Frew’s take on a blokey dad who traps his son inside the “pastriarchy” is genius.

It’s a wild ride; you’re never quite sure which direction they’ll take you in, and sometimes, when they break character or script, it doesn’t seem like they know either. But that’s all part of the infectious fun.
